Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: vibrant, varied, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
