Jailhouse Surprise: The Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life in Prison

He battled justice and justice won.

Sixty days after getting a 27-year sentence for trying to “destroy” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro now appears destined for incarceration.

Expected Incarceration

The convicted coup-monger – who has been under residential detention in his estate while a series of court processes and petitions unfold – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid growing rumors that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.

Previous Statements on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the far-right ex- military man exhibited little compassion for Brazil’s prison population.

“For what reason must we offer these scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They should just get screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Prison Location Discussion

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, several of whom this week inspected the facility in an obvious bid to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he anticipated the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious digestive ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His condition is highly critical. He won’t be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be terrible,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells containing 40 inmates: “That is virtually one meter squared per inmate.

“We spoke to the prisoners and they protest, of course, of the awful cuisine,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views before the one-time head of state's expected imprisonment.

Penning in a major newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to see “the biggest political injustice in its record”.

“It represents an unfairness that erodes the souls of countless of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Public Response

It is possibly accurate due to the significant backing Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. However his expected imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of millions individuals who feel he should be jailed for planning to prevent his successor from becoming president – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the current president's allied group, said: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. No one wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to obtain respectful treatment – but respectful treatment behind bars. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have long applauding the tough treatment of inmates, had suddenly become aware to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly claimed that civil liberties should not be for offenders – chosen to tour a jail to find out what circumstances are really like,” he remarked.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Environment

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely destination appears to be a nearby penitentiary for officers and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a far cry from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while residing in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 20 kilometers away.

Based on sources, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – roughly the area of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter terrace. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a TV and even a minibar in his room as long as they were donated by his relatives,” the report suggested.

Political Reactions

The lawmaker criticized the speculated plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his future in the {
