Joseph Parker & Fabio Wardley Prepared for ‘All or Nothing’ Showdown with Opportunity at Oleksandr Usyk on the Line

The sport of boxing is in a significant decline this season, with a scarcity of big events and considerably fewer engaging contests than normal. The possibility of a serious and intriguing heavyweight battle between Parker and Fabio Wardley at the iconic O₂ Arena provides some solace to the struggling sport. This is Parker’s 40th fight and, apart from three losses, he has been dropped multiple times by multiple challengers. He always gets up but Wardley hits harder than any opponent he's encountered – with the exception of Wilder who looked a shell of a devastating finisher when Parker swept to a clear unanimous decision in December 2023.

Wardley, who began in white-collar boxing, who only started boxing when he was 20, had no amateur experience and has always had to overcome skepticism over his skill set. But he is similarly close to a world title challenge.

“This is the biggest bout, right now, in the heavyweight class. These two boxers have stepped up when neither of them had to agree to this match. Joe Parker is the WBO interim champion and they have previously mandated Usyk to fight him, but he was hurt. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Wardley is also in an excellent situation and he merely needed to be patient for his chance. He said ‘I refuse.’ He wanted to fight – and versus Parker because it provides him a shot to jump the queue.”

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not focused on a loss. I honor my adversary and his accomplishments and his preparation for this contest. But I am on a higher plane and I am going to show it on the day of the bout.”

Wardley’s Outlook

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It is a massive night for the pair of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my career and the most important fight ever. But each time I rise to the occasion I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be no different. The gap between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a frequent topic throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a numerous contests on his resume. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the sport for a while and had numerous grueling matches. I've also endured brutal fights and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those fights than I have.”

But the lingering doubt persists that Parker is likely to be too seasoned, and too technically proficient, for Wardley. He should win a hard-fought contest with the conviction that he is the leading contender for a title shot against Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a clear gap.
