Joe Hill started his career striving diligently to distance himself from his famous father, adopting the nom de plume he still uses today and steering clear of encounters with his agent (he exhibits a uncanny likeness to his parent). But in this latest novel, he leans into it. Several quotes that intentionally mirror some of King’s most famous (the famous Dark Tower introduction); a scene that evokes a King plot point (a riddling contest). In this whopper of a novel, the author rejoices in his heritage, and readers share in the joy.

Introducing the Main Characters

Back to those friends: most are pupils at the fictional Rackham College in this northeastern locale. First is Arthur, bookish and gifted, cracking ancient puzzles in his free moments; the character Colin, wealthy, astute, and known for crushing obstacles in his path; twins Donna and Donovan; the beautiful Allie. Then we have Gwen, who doesn’t study with them, but becomes a key part of their band as they toy, partly convinced, half not, in arcane arts.

This devastates his scholarly soul, notably because he’s forced to acquire the library’s most valuable and unsettling title: the logbook of occultist this enigmatic character (condemned “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the cover is made from his skin). These young investigators read the journal, discover they could summon what Crane describes as a “proud worm to aid our hero with his coercion issue – and devote the remaining story enduring the repercussions. The dragon will indeed rid them of those annoying regional antagonists, but they’ll have to choose a new sacrifice annually or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As Arthur later puts it: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is further monstrosities.”

Narrative Fluidity and Imaginative Range

Moving through four decades, Hill also moves with natural fluency across narrative styles: as the allies strive to manage the situation they find themselves in by, in different ways, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to sacrifice, or hunting down ways to kill the dragon themselves, we go from thriller to shadowy tale, black-ops torture to romance to terror. One particularly memorable shift was to a heroic journey, far beneath the surface beneath this UK region, a section infused with the fantasy maestro that was wonderfully frightening.

A Detailed Mosaic of Horror and Optimism

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and digital trolls, properly scary and superbly depicted. The story includes mystic weapons and deceptions, breath-taking moments of courage and instances of appalling malevolence, both human and supernatural. It’s a tour de force: a frightening tale that is chiefly a ode to the human inventiveness, and to love and friendship. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says this character as the friends sit around the table, making preparations to call forth their dragon to life with the power of their thoughts.
