Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
