A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
