As I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a deal.
However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning home,” Camara said.
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and build his own legendary path in the game.
