England’s men’s team will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they attain the relatively straightforward passage for a tournament staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an English men’s match since eight years ago, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is almost certain to stage the England side for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
The English side are set to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning the preliminary round, their round of 16 match would be held at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean beginning the elimination stage at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The event was unveiled at an ceremony in Piccadilly Circus on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were barracked as they entered the site by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged Israel to be removed from the sport because of the situation in Gaza.
Signs were displayed with slogans reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators called out: “Kick Israel out.”
The opening game of the tournament will be held at the the national stadium of Wales in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will involve the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5pm.
It is expected that an earlier start, which will also be used for European club finals from next season, will appeal to family audiences and help reach a more diverse set of viewers.
The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two automatic spots will be held in reserve for any that do not reach the finals through that route.
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena round out the nine tournament locations. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals staged at every host’s main arena.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on 6 December 2026.
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a showcase of everything we love about the game – its passion and ability to bring people together.”
Over 3 million admissions, a unprecedented number for a Euro tournament, are anticipated to be made available to fans.
