A large-scale search and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailboats loaded with aid cargo journeying from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Missions Initiated

Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than nine total personnel, per a military release.

The boats had been expected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island grapples with multiple national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with suitable navigational gear and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Previous Aid Delivery

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Larger International Context

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k operations called off in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from different leaders underscoring the complicated situation regarding bilateral relations.

Reacting to previous proposals, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that initial phases of talks were initiated, although their current progress remains unclear.

The maritime authorities said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to locate the sailboats and secure the security of the crews.

To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
