New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
