Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific rulings from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
