The city's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his campaign.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly after his victory in November.

"My choice rested on our family's safety and the importance of directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us what is great about New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, Astoria will always live a part of me and my work," he affirmed.

Political Debate

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and championed significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
